Keep new year fitness resolutions on track with Beethoven?
Every now and then I receive a press release that really speaks to me. I thought I’d share this one. After all, sharing is caring, right?
Neuroscientist Dr.Jack Lewis teams up with music streaming site rara.com to develop workout playlists. Now you can keep your new year resolution in tact with the help of a little music.
An expert in how the human brain works, Dr. Jack Lewis looked for music that would deliver the maximum performance enhancement during exercise – known in scientific circles as ‘ergogenic’ benefit. So how exactly do you ready the brain for exercise and maintain focus during a tough workout session? With music, of course. “Gym-goers stand a better chance of reaching their fitness goals by applying science to their workout playlists,” says leading neuroscientist.
Dr. Jack Lewis offers these top five tips for creating workout-boosting playlists:
- Try out classical music to feel the benefits of both motivation and relaxation
- Listen to music before exercise to get ‘in the zone’ like an Olympic athlete
- Choose songs that are ‘beautiful to your ear’
- Match playlist tracks to desired heart rate for optimum results
- Motivational music is especially important for women
Another bonus … you can get your hands on this ready-made neuroscience-inspired playlist for FREE. Type in the code HOLIDAY2012 before the 31st of January to receive the 11-track playlist from rara.com. The playlist features such acts as Michael Jackson, Beethoven, Tinie Tempah and Johnny Cash. What are you waiting for? Get the most out of your next workout with this scientifically-proven playlist.

Excellent blog post Belinda. A must share with my readers.
Fantastic! One composer who particularly motivates me is not Beethoven or Michael Jackson, but Aram Khachaturian, and Armenian. His bouncy rhythms are very helpful at the end of a run.
